Safeguarding Statement

Hoo St Werburgh Primary School and Marlborough Centre  is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all children and expects all staff, governors and volunteers to share this commitment. Safeguarding children and protecting them from harm is everyone’s responsibility. Everyone who comes into contact with children and families has a role to play.

We listen to our pupils and take seriously what they tell us.  All school staff are trained in Child Protection & Safeguarding.  Children are made aware of the adults they can talk to if they have any concerns.  Staff are trained to look out for signs of physical /emotional harm, neglect and sexual abuse and are required to report these to the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL).

We have a number of policies and procedures in place that contribute to our safeguarding commitment, including our Safeguarding Policy which can be viewed in the policies section on our website.  On occasions our concern about a child may mean that we have to consult outside agencies such as social services.  We will ensure that all concerns are discussed first with parents/carers before any such referrals are made, unless of course we believe that such action may be contrary to a child’s welfare.

We actively support the Government’s Prevent Agenda to counter radicalism and extremism, and all staff have CSE and FGM training.

Safeguarding in the Curriculum

Pupil safeguarding and the promotion of fundamental British values are a core business of our work at Hoo St Werburgh Primary School. Great importance is placed on identifying opportunities in the curriculum for children to learn about safeguarding. Our broad curriculum gives pupils opportunities to learn about our diverse world and provides them with the knowledge and skills required for personal safeguarding. Our PSHE, SRE and IT curriculum covers all aspects of safeguarding and is taught across the school at an age appropriate level and in small groups or on a 1:1 basis where appropriate.

We encourage children to think deeply about safeguarding matters and their own physical and mental wellbeing. We value pupils’ questions and give them space to share their own thoughts, ideas and concerns. We give them opportunities across the curriculum to explore values, rights, responsibilities and equal opportunities. This enables our pupils to develop an understanding of moral concepts in a way that: impacts positively on safeguarding; promotes British values and prevents radicalisation and extremism.

A number of practical safeguarding opportunities are planned into the curriculum, for example:

  • Road and rail safety
  • Bikeability
  • Basic First Aid
  • Stranger awareness
  • Poolside and water safety
  • Fire safety
  • Visits from health professionals
  • Supporting charity work, such as the Poppy Appeal and Children in Need
  • NSPCC Visits and Assemblies
  • Pupil voice and surveys: school council and ambassadors
