English Writing

Intent

At Hoo St Werburgh Primary School, our intent is to cultivate a love of writing among our pupils. The primary aim is to develop confident, competent writers who can express themselves clearly for various purposes and audiences. We believe that writing must emerge from high-quality texts, engaging experiences, and diverse viewpoints and therefore ensure these features are built into the curriculum. Our purpose is to inspire children to embrace the art of writing, thereby creating a community that values not only literacy but also creativity. With this in mind, we prioritise writing that connects meaningfully to our children's learning journeys, helping them to internalise subject-specific language and themes.

Implementation

Each year group experiences a carefully planned progression in writing skills, such as building vocabulary, structuring sentences, and applying grammar and punctuation effectively.

• High-Quality Texts: Teachers will select a range of high-quality texts that exemplify effective writing. These texts will be integrated into lessons to both motivate and influence student writing, ensuring that they learn by example.
• Linking to Learning Journey: Writing tasks will be linked directly to the learning journey in various subjects, allowing children to express their understanding of topics explored in class through writing. This interdisciplinary approach reinforces learning and demonstrates the relevance of writing across the curriculum.
• Writing process: Throughout KS2, children will follow a system whereby the will immerse themselves within a text, plan, draft, edit and improve and the publish their final work. This gives children an opportunity to gather ideas and tweak and change them before producing the final copy.
• Drawing club: In EYFS and KS1, children will be immersed in drawing club which supports their writing by providing creative opportunities to generate ideas.
• Diverse Experiences: Writing lessons will involve experiences such as school trips, author visits, and role-play to immerse children in real-world contexts, inspiring their writing. Additionally, lessons are planned so thar children can write from different viewpoints, enhancing their creativity. 
• Grammar, Punctuation, and Spelling (GPS): Each year group will focus on GPS elements, integrating specific lessons on grammar and punctuation. The Nelson handwriting scheme will be used to develop neat and legible handwriting, while the Read Write Spell programme will provide structured spelling practice.
• Moderation and Feedback: Regular writing moderation sessions will be held within the school and Trust, allowing teachers to share best practices and assess pupils' work collectively. This will ensure consistency and uphold high standards across all classes.

Impact 

The impact will be seen through improved writing skills across all year groups, where we will see children’s writing flourish. We anticipate that our pupils will develop a robust love of writing, resilience in their writing tasks, and an awareness of audience and purpose. Through consistent practice and exposure to high-quality texts, students will not only meet national standards but also exceed them, showcasing creativity and independence in their work. The skills acquired through our curriculum will prepare them for future academic endeavours and equip them with the tools necessary for lifelong learning.
