Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling

Throughout the school from Years 1-6. GPaS rules are taught throughout all areas of learning to a high standard. Our curriculum promotes an excellent understanding of Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling, by teaching progressive, challenging lessons that build each year.

We focus closely on grammar, specifically patterns and rules in a language, putting words, phrases and clauses together to make structures to communicate clearly to our reader. In the early years of schooling, children are taught patterns and conventions that we use to speak and write, however, spoken language does not have clearly demarcated sections that are required in writing. Therefore, the teaching of grammar and punctuation at Hoo St Werburgh helps children to understand what a sentence is and how they are formed.

New spelling patterns are explicitly taught to the children across each term and children have regular, engaging opportunities to specifically enhance their spelling ability. Where appropriate, children’s phonics and spelling strategies are also assessed. From Years 2-6 children have vocabulary books to record their attempts at any new/unsure spellings which is then supported and taught by their adult. Children are encouraged to practise their spellings at home to support their learning in class.
