Oracy

High level oracy is a fundamental and integral part of our teaching and learning at Hoo St Werburgh.

We promote high quality talk in all of our classrooms, which explicitly relates to our current Learning Journeys being taught. The school offers a talk rich environment that brings oracy into the heart of the classroom. It is also woven throughout the school in assemblies, class debates, story-telling, reading sessions and much more.

From Nursery through to Year 6 we encourage child autonomy to develop the social and emotional aspect oracy by listening, responding and working together collaboratively. It is crucial our children emerge from education able to think for themselves and to think collaboratively in a critical, caring way and we achieve this through our rich questioning and discussions.

Oracy is the root of confidence for our children and this builds from their school environment where all ideas matter. Children are prepared for these ideas to be respectfully challenged and affirmed. Children listen to one another, showing respect for peers whilst having opportunity to expand their own understanding and knowledge.
