VB-MAPP
The VB-MAPP is a curriculum developed by Dr Mark Sundberg based in increasing communication and understanding of language specifically for children with ASD.
It breaks down learning tasks into small achievable steps and is ideally suited for pupils who are in need of further preparation for more formal academic learning.
Introducing and developing a functional communication system where pupils can express their wants and needs, develop understanding of vocabulary and be able to use this within their communication and learning is fundamental to our beliefs at The Marlborough. We focus on building skills using this curriculum to advance pupils as quickly as possible according to their needs.
Within the VB-MAPP pupils learn across various ‘strands’ of understanding:
- How to use words to request items, information and actions from a variety of adults/peers as appropriate.
- How to use words to label items, actions, prepositions and attributes.
- How to listen to the words of others and respond appropriately as a listener.
- How to match items based on visual likeness, complete visual based tasks such as puzzles and visual problems.
- How to imitate another’s actions to be able to learn through modelling.
- How to refine the understanding of vocabulary to include attributes and categories as a precursor for more interactive conversation.
- How to use a more refined vocabulary to contribute to and extend conversational ability.
Not all of our pupils need to benefit from this curriculum if they already have substantial skills in these areas. It is assessed on a pupil-by-pupil basis and is taught mainly using a 1:1 format. Learning with the VB-MAPP can be achieved through play, topic based learning and some more familiar pre-academic tasks based in English/Maths where appropriate.
All pupils in The Marlborough continue to receive daily Sounds Write teaching and Math concept work in keeping with termly overview planning.
